The Department of Nuclear Engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, conducts research in a number of areas related to the research and development of radiation instrumentation for nuclear nonproliferation technologies. Most of this research at UT is is focused on: radiation detection and instrumentation, semiconductor synthesis and characterization in support of radiation detector and high power electronics development, and direct energy conversion nuclear battery technology as well as sensor development for gamma ray and neutron imaging, as well as techniques for improved, quantitative analysis of the associated data.

This research has been supported by sponsors including the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, UT-Battelle, and medical imaging companies.
